20,589 pensioners in South Leicestershire will be poorer under government pension “betrayal”

The Liberal Democrats have published figures showing that 20,589 of State Pensioners in South Leicestershire are set to be impacted by the government’s threat to break its manifesto promise and not increase pensions in line with inflation.

The broken promise could mean a real terms cut of hundreds of pounds each, forcing many to choose between heating and eating this winter.

This comes despite a Conservatives manifesto commitment to keep the pensions triple lock in place until 2024, and despite prices rising at their fastest rate for 40 years.
The Liberal Democrats have warned that the Conservatives are “betraying elderly residents,” many of whom are living in poverty. The party is demanding that the government halts their plans to plunge pensioners into poverty and ensure that we don’t return to the times of 75p rises.

Commenting, Paul Hartshorn South Leicestershire political spokesperson said:
“This is set to be yet another betrayal by the Conservatives, who now threaten to ruin pensioners’ incomes to clean up their botched budget.
“Slashing pensions will be devastating. Many pensioners are already left cold and hungry due to spiralling bills. Another blow to their incomes would be grossly unfair
“Our pensioners deserve a fair deal. The triple lock was a cast iron guarantee that vulnerable elderly people were relying on, and the Conservatives have failed them miserably.
“Pensioners in South Leicestershire have been taken for granted for too long by this out-of-touch government. They deserve better.”
